5 children have died after their school bus fell into a canal in Muhawa town close Amritsar on Tuesday.

The bus, conveying students of DAV Public School, Neshta, Attari, Amritsar. The mishap occurred in Muhawa town at around 1:30 pm when the bus, conveying 37 students, was dropping kids home after school.

5 children died on the spot. 11 have been critically injured and have been referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar. Another 11 injured have been referred to Arora hospital, Chehratta village, Amritsar.

Bus driver Charanjit Singh, of Rajataal village, fled from the spot.

Police and school authorities have rushed to the spot where a rescue operation is underway.
