GUWAHATI : The flood in Assam keeps on being terrible with five more deaths reported from various parts of the state on Thursday, taking the toll to 20 in this way.
While three persons drowned in Barpeta area, two others endured a similat fate in Dhemaji and Kokrajhar. Among the five victims, one was a young lady. Till Wednesday, the toll was 15 as the second influx of floods wreaked destruction over the state since a month ago.
With the deluge showing no signs of relenting, the number of flood-hit districts has risen to 22 where nearly 18 lakh were hit on Thursday. Over 2.13 lakh hectares of crop area was also damaged. The latest district to be inundated is South Kamrup.
On Thursday, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited Majuli, one of the worst hit areas in the state, to take stock of the situation and review rescue operations there. Sonowal also undertook an aerial survey of Nagaon, Morigaon, Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts as well.
